Since the introduction of double layer DVD writers, the interest has been quite overwhelming and is why we keep bringing you reviews of these highly popular drives. The anticipation has now turned into down right obsession and it has become a key component in any current or new system build, thanks to the declining prices and continued media hype. Manufacturers are quite aware of the fascination and is why they have each been releasing their own products which excel in at least one area of the testing methodology used in most reviews. This has led to some confusion as to which drive is best suited for the individuals needs. Today, we compare four 16x double layer drives and highlight both the strong and weak points in order to give you a better idea of which drive is best suited for you.
In this comparison guide, we will be looking at four of the top 16x drives to hit the market, the Pioneer DVR-108, NEC ND3500A, Lite-On SOHW-1633s and the new LG GSA-4160B. We will cover everything from design and features to performance and price. Let’s begin with a quick look at each of these drives.
As far as the front bezel design goes, the LG-GSA4160B is by far the most attractive drive of the bunch. However, for those who are looking for a headphone jack, the Lite-On drive is the only DL writer offering a headphone jack, as well as volume control. The Pioneer and NEC drives, in my opinion, are the ugliest drives, with a very plain look that just wants to make you hide the drive period. Although we only obtained the 4160B in black, all these drives are offered with both white and black bezels. If you opt for the more expensive Pioneer “XL” model, it has the most impressive looks of any drive in the market. However, this will come at a very hefty price tag, considering they contain different firmware as well that offer a few extra features.

So, we have determined which is the sexiest-looking drive, but what about performance? I’ve done some extensive testing on each model to determine which is indeed the most impressive of the bunch. But before we show you performance results, let’s briefly look at the features and what they have to offer.
Features

Each one of these drives has there disappointments when it comes to features. Let’s compare each to see what they really offer.

DVD Writing

DVD+R DVD-R DVD+RW DVD-RW
LG GSA-4160B 16x 8x 4x 4x
Lite-On SOHW-1633s 16x 8x 4x 4x
NEC ND-3500A 16x 16x 4x 4x
Pioneer DVR-108 16x 16x 4x 4x

While all these drives are indeed 16x models, only two will write to both formats at this speed. The LG GSA-4160B and the Lite-On SOHW-1633s only support 8x DVD-R writing. So if you are one who only prefers this format, the NEC or Pioneer would be the best choice. All of these drives support writing to DVD re-writable media at 4x.

DVD+R9 Double Layer Writing

Write Speed
LG GSA-4160B 2.4x
Lite-On SOHW-1633s 2.4x
NEC ND-3500A 4x
Pioneer DVR-108 4x

The major disappointment with both the LG and the Lite-On 16x drives is the lack of 4x double layer writing support. Pioneer and NEC seem to be the only manufacturers to jump in and release second generation double layer drives supporting much faster 4x writing. In fact, the jump from 2.4x to 4x is quite substantial as we will show you a bit later in this comparison.

DVD-RAM Support

Supported Read Write
LG GSA-4160B YES 5x 5x
Lite-On SOHW-1633s NO NO NO
NEC ND-3500A NO NO NO
Pioneer DVR-108 YES 2x NO

Now this is where both the LG GSA-4120B and GSA-4160B shine above the rest. In fact, it is what has made these drives the most popular DVD writers on the market. Unlike the rest in the roundup, it is a triple format burner, offering full support for DVD-RAM media. The other drives do not support it, with the exception of the Pioneer DVR-108 which supports reading of DVD-RAM discs at 2x. I personally don’t see the point in offering only read capabilities, but it’s at least one extra feature added to distinguish it from the rest. Fast 5x support of the LG GSA-4160 will actually be tested a bit later in this article.

CDR Writing

CDR CDRW
LG GSA-4160B 40x 24x
Lite-On SOHW-1633s 48x 24x
NEC ND-3500A 48x 24x
Pioneer DVR-108 32x 24x

The fastest CDR writers of the bunch are the Lite-On SOHW-1633s and the NEC ND-3500A. With their support for 48x writing, they make a great all-in-one drive for many users. The only drive lacking in this lineup is the Pioneer DVR-108. Why they opted for only 32x writing is still quite puzzling and is actually why I have found that many are choosing the NEC over the Pioneer. The LG GSA-4160B should not be left out of consideration though. We will show you later that the difference in write times between 40x and 48x is not much to brag about.

Bitsetting Support

One feature I’ve found that is most important for many users is bitsetting support. Let’s compare these drives and see what they offer.

DVD+R/RW Support DVD+R DL Support
LG GSA-4160B NO NO
Lite-On SOHW-1633s YES NO
NEC ND-3500A NO YES
Pioneer DVR-108 NO YES

The LG GSA-4160B does not offer bitsetting support out of the box. However, it is very likely that you will be able to obtain support through an excellent third-party tool called DVDInfo Pro. Right now, they only support the GSA-4120B, but I’m confident with the author that support for this drive will be likely. LG firmware is very hard to hack, however some select few have been able to do so. Using Lite-On’s booktype utility, you can change the booktype of DVD+R/RW media, however, the firmware does not automatically change booktype of DVD+R DL discs to DVD-ROM like the NEC and Pioneer models do.

Additional Features

As far as other features go, all these drives have a 2MB buffer but offer some sort of buffer under-run protection, which all work exceptionally well. This is especially useful if you will be burning discs at 16x, which I personally don’t recommend just yet. As our individual tests of these drives revealed, burning at this speed is quite unstable, with the exception of the Lite-On SOHW-1633s.

Motorola is busy focusing on Google’s Android these days, and has quit the LiMo Foundation. Christy Wyatt, vice president, software applications and ecosystems, Motorola, mentioned that she was no longer on the board of the LiMo Foundation, as reported by PC World. The company has decided to remain as an associate member and retain an active role as a contributing member. As a result, Motorola is now no longer listed as a founder member on the LiMo website; it is also now ineligible to run for a board seat. In 2010, the company plans to release a host of mobile phones that will use Google’s Android OS.

Following up on the release of the beta app catalogue e-commerce programme, Palm is planning to open its app distribution programme to the entire Palm WebOS developer community by the end of the year. Under the programme, developers will receive 70 percent of the revenue after tax deductions. Developers who charge for their software will need to set up a PayPal account to receive their share of revenue from Palm, who will keep 30 percent. Customers will initially be able to purchase applications with MasterCard and Visa.

The company’s membership-based programme will have a $99 annual fee for developers of proprietary applications, while developers of open source software won’t be required to pay the programme, states the company blog. As announced in August, the company is accepting applications to the beta app catalogue e-commerce program for distribution on the catalogue.

Palm also plans to launch a full-scale developer program to encourage third-party applications for its WebOS platform by the end of the year, and is making a special pitch to open source developers.

The content management market is seeing dramatic changes thanks to new open source and commercial open source entries that are making significant inroads with customers. According to The Definitive Guide to Today’s Content Management Systems and Vendors, a new 150-page report series from Basex, a knowledge economy research firm, the advent of open source software has significantly changed the process of selecting a content management solution. The report series looks at 32 key content management vendors and 43 platforms, and provides an analysis – including market trends, drivers, and barriers – to guide decision makers in the selection process. Basex estimates that the US market for content management was $4.1 billion in 2008 and will reach $10 billion by 2014. Open source content management is gaining traction in some circles and the overall open source software market is growing rapidly. The report reveals that choosing the right content management system is far from straight forward and requires an in-depth understanding of both the organization’s needs and what the market has to offer. It points out that companies need to be prepared to manage multiple forms of content, including wikis, blogs, RSS feeds, social networks, podcasts and video. Also, companies that spends hundreds of thousands of dollars for content management systems might do equally well with platforms that cost one-tenth that amount.

The Momentus series of 2.5 inch drives from Seagate are great notebook storage solutions. The ST9500325ASG model that has a capacity of 500 GB with an 8-MB cache.

Seagate has used a two platter design for this 2.5 inch drive. This drive is 9.5 mm thick which is the standard for notebook hard drives now.

Synthetic benchmarks aside, this drive did well in real world tests too. It took 56.4 seconds to write a 4-GB sequential file and 72.7 seconds to write 4-GB assorted data resulting an average write speed of about 64.48 MBps (sequential and assorted) as per sources. Read times were also mighty impressive as 4-GB of sequential data took 60.6 sec while 4-GB of assorted data took 67.7 sec giving an average read speed of also 64 MBps.

This is a great drive if you want an upgrade for your notebook, especially if you like to store a lot of data on it. This mighty little thing will cost you at around Rs.5000/-

Be sure not to misuse this Password protection errors with flash drive If you are unable to copy or format your pen drive, by whatever reasons may be if is it infected with viruses or may if you have given it to someone may be your friend. then you can try some of the tricks. Try using USB writeprotector(www.gaijin.at/dlusnwp.php) to unlock the drive. With any flash drive or memory card, one of the simplest ways to remove the write protection is to delete the partition. Click on Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management. Click on the flash drive, right click on the only partition and delete it. Remember that this will delete all data on the drive. If nothing works, it might be worth trying to format the drive also. If you are using Nokia phone, use an application called FExplorer and access the memory card. The password should be present in a text file in the root folder.

The commercial sponsor of Ubuntu, has released an agreement with Intel Corporation to deliver Ubuntu as an operating system for the Intel powered Classmate PC’s. The new Intel powered Classmate PC (a netbook specifically designed for the education market) features a larger screen, more memory and larger SSD and HDD than he original classmate PC. It will also features a modified version of Ubuntu Netbook Remix for the first time, improving the experience on smaller screens. The Intel powered convertible Classmate PC features a touch screen on which users can rest their palm to write or draw, converts from clamshell to tablet PC, and auto-adjusts between landscape and portrait, depending on how the machine is held. Ubuntu will support all these use cases.

“Not only is this a significant step for an open operating system, it is a significant step for any device to be able to offer these capabilities, at this cost, on standardised hardware.” said Jon Melamut, general manager, OEM services, Canonical. ” Our goal has always been to take the best technology and make its available to everyone. Coupling our software with a fantastic, affordable education device like this is a concrete realisation of that ambition.”

Red Hat has announced an optimised solution developed with HP around Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) Governance. The JBoss Enterprise SOA platform has been optimised to be governed by HP SOA Systinet software. With the addition of HP SOA Systinet, customers have an opportunity to drive revenue, remove costly errors and resond to market changes when they automate business processes through a deployment on JBoss Enterprise SPA platform.

“Our collaboration with HP and its Systinet team offers a direct benefit to our SOA customers because now they will be able to deploy the two solutions together, and know that they have a secure and trusted governance framework that enhances their ability to reap the full benefits of their SOA deployment,” said Craig Muzilla, vice president, Middleware, Red Hat.

If you are not sure then do not try the procedure cause BIOS is the Most critical part of the Motherboard and its failure can even destroy your Motherboard.

Troubleshooting BIOS Beep Codes

The BIOS performs a power-on self-test (POST) when the system is turned on. This test is used to ensure that the system is functioning properly and to gather information about what the system contains. When a problem is identified with the system during the POST, the BIOS will normally produce an error message. However, in some cases the problem is detected so early in the test that the BIOS cannot even access the video card to print the message! In this case the BIOS will produce a beeping pattern on the speaker to tell you what the problem is.

The exact meaning of the beep codes depends on the type and version of BIOS that you have. The three most popular types of BIOS are those made by Award, American Megatrends (AMI) and Phoenix. The beep codes for these BIOS products are described in this part of the troubleshooter. If you are using a PC made by a company that writes its own BIOS, you will have to consult your owner’s manual or the company’s web site or other technical information for assistance.

Warning: The normal procedure is for a motherboard or computer manufacturer to purchase the BIOS code from one of these companies and then modify it as they see fit to match what they are doing with their hardware. So it is possible that the codes may be slightly different for your PC than what I have here, which is for the generic products. In general, the beep codes are usually identical or very close to what I have here, but the tests performed by the BIOS can easily be different or be executed in a different order.

Note: A single beep during the boot process, usually right before the BIOS startup screen is displayed, is normal and does not indicate a failure as long as the boot continues on.

Beep codes can be in several different patterns, depending on the BIOS that you are using. Some BIOSes use very simple beep codes in a pattern of varying numbers of short beeps, while others may mix short and long beeps. The Phoenix BIOS is famous for its complicated beep patterns that are actually in up to four groups–one or more beeps and then a pause, followed by as many as three more patterns.

Warning: Despite what the BIOS companies say, these codes are not always that consistent. I have seen systems that when booted without a video card give just a single beep and not the code that they are supposed to give when the video card is missing.

Next: American Megatrends Inc. (AMI BIOS)

Troubleshooting BIOS Beep Codes – AMI BIOS

The AMI BIOS is one of the most popular in the PC world today, and fortunately is quite consistent in its use of beep codes, across its many different versions. Please select the beep pattern you are hearing from the list in the index frame.

BIOS Boot Block Recovery: Pin shorting Guide

Introduction

BIOS chips, particularly the new ones have a built-in Boot Block sector, which allows the BIOS to be recovered if it is corrupted by a power mishap, misflash, or a virus. You really don’t need to throw away a hard earned just to recover from a boot block mode. If you got guts and need to feel glory then read on.

AwardBIOS

The shorting trick should work if the boot block code is not corrupted, and it would not be corrupted if /sb switch was used when flashing the bios instead of /wb switch.

The two (2) pins used in shorting to force a checksum error vary from chip to chip. Usually these are the highest-numbered address pins (A10 and above). Most common are pins number 2 & 3. (Refer to image) These are the pins used by the system to read the System BIOS (original.bin for Award V.6), now, calculate the ROM checksum and see if it’s valid before decompressing it into the memory, and subsequently allowing Bootblock POST to pass control over to the System BIOS.

You just have to ‘fool’ the system into believing that the System BIOS is corrupt. You can do this by shorting the two (2) high address pins, thereby making it difficult for your system to read the System BIOS subsequently resulting to a ROM Checksum Error and activating a Bootblock recovery.

There will be cases that shorting any combination of the high address pins would not work to force a checksum error in some chips, like in the case of my Winbond W49F002U. Shorting the #WE (Write Enable) with the highest-numbered address pin (A17) worked for this chip. You just have to experiment a little if you’re not comfortable with “Hot Flashing” or “Replacement BIOS”. Refer to the chip’s datasheet for reference.

If you’re not sure which are the correct pins to short and avoid further damaging your chip, measure the potential between the 2 pins using a Voltmeter while the system is on. If the voltage reading is zero (or no potential at all), then it is safe to short these pins. But do not short the pins while the system is on. Instead, power down short the pins then power up. And as soon as you hear 3 beeps (1 long, 2 short), remove the short at once so that automatic reflashing from Drive A can proceed without errors (assuming you had autoexec.bat in it).

The tip of a screwdriver would do in shorting the pins but with such tiny pins on the PLCC chip, I’m pretty comfortable using a precision screwdriver. Short the pins at the point where they come protrude of the chip. Be careful not to short other pins as this might damage the CMOS chip or the mobo itself.

AMIBIOS

1. Copy a known working BIOS image for your board to a floppy and rename it to AMIBOOT.ROM.

2. Insert the floppy in your system’s floppy drive.

3. Power on the system while holding CTRL+Home keys. Release the keys when you hear a beep and/or see the floppy light coming on.

4 . Just wait until you hear 4 beeps. When 4 beeps are heard the reprogramming of the System Block BIOS went successful, so then you may restart your system.

Some Alternative Keys that can be used to force BIOS update (only the System Block will be updated so it’s quite safe):

CTRL+Home – To restore missing code into system block and clear CMOS when programming went ok.

CTRL+Page Up – To restore missing code into system block and clear CMOS or DMI when programming went ok.

CTRL+Page Down – To restore missing code into system block and do not clear CMOS and DMI area when programming went ok

Important : Take note that the above alternative keys will work only on AMIBIOS V.7 or higher. An AMIBIOS V.6.26 can only be recovered by using CTRL+Home keys.

Flashing Without Video Display

AMIBIOS has integrated a recovery routine into the BOOT BLOCK of the BIOS, which in the event the BIOS become corrupt can be used to restore the BIOS to a working state. The routine is called when the SYSTEM BLOCK of the BIOS is empty. The restore routine will access the floppy drive looking for a BIOS file names AMIBOOT.ROM, this is why the floppy drive light comes on and the drive spins. If the file is found it is loaded into the SYSTEM BLOCK of the BIOS to replace the missing information. To restore your BIOS simply copy a working BIOS file to a floppy diskette and rename it AMIBOOT.ROM, then insert it into the computer while the power is on. The diskette does not need to be bootable or contain a flash utility. After about four minutes the system will beep four times. Remove the floppy diskette from the drive and reboot the computer. The BIOS should now be restored.

Recovering a Corrupt AwardBIOS

To recover from a corrupted AwardBIOS you will need to create a floppy diskette with a working BIOS file in .BIN format, an AWARD flash utility and an AUTOEXEC.BAT file. AwardBIOS will not automatically restore the BIOS information to the SYSTEM BLOCK, for this reason you will need to add the commands necessary to flash the BIOS in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

The system will run the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, which in turn will flash the BIOS. This is fairly easy. Here are the steps you need to take.

1. Create a bootable floppy diskette

2. Copy the BIOS file and flash utility to the diskette

3. Create a text file with any standard text editor and add the following lines:

@ECHO OFF

AWARD822 BIOSFILE.BIN /py

In the above example I am assuming that you are using the AWARD822.EXE flash utility. You will need to replace the AWARD822 with the name of whatever flash utility you are using and replace the BIOSFILE.BIN with the name of the BIOS file you are using. You will also need to change the /py to whatever ‘command’ is required for your flash utility to automatically program the BIOS without user intervention. If you do not know the command to automatically flash your BIOS type the name of the flash utility with a space and then /? to display the utility help screen. The help screen should specify the command switch to automatically flash your BIOS. If you are using the AWARD822.EXE utility then the switch to automatically flash your BIOS is /py.

Since defragging the disk won’t do much to improve Windows XP performance, here are 23 suggestions that will. Each can enhance the performance and reliability of your customers’ PCs. Best of all, most of them will cost you nothing.
1.) To decrease a system’s boot time and increase system performance, use the money you save by not buying defragmentation software — the built-in Windows defragmenter works just fine — and instead equip the computer with an Ultra-133 or Serial ATA hard drive with 8-MB cache buffer.

2.) If a PC has less than 512 MB of RAM, add more memory. This is a relatively inexpensive and easy upgrade that can dramatically improve system performance.

3.) Ensure that Windows XP is utilizing the NTFS file system. If you’re not sure, here’s how to check: First, double-click the My Computer icon, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Next, examine the File System type; if it says FAT32, then back-up any important data. Next, click Start, click Run, type CMD, and then click OK. At the prompt, type CONVERT C: /FS:NTFS and press the Enter key. This process may take a while; it’s important that the computer be uninterrupted and virus-free. The file system used by the bootable drive will be either FAT32 or NTFS. I highly recommend NTFS for its superior security, reliability, and efficiency with larger disk drives.

4.) Disable file indexing. The indexing service extracts information from documents and other files on the hard drive and creates a “searchable keyword index.” As you can imagine, this process can be quite taxing on any system.

The idea is that the user can search for a word, phrase, or property inside a document, should they have hundreds or thousands of documents and not know the file name of the document they want. Windows XP’s built-in search functionality can still perform these kinds of searches without the Indexing service. It just takes longer. The OS has to open each file at the time of the request to help find what the user is looking for.

Most people never need this feature of search. Those who do are typically in a large corporate environment where thousands of documents are located on at least one server. But if you’re a typical system builder, most of your clients are small and medium businesses. And if your clients have no need for this search feature, I recommend disabling it.

Here’s how: First, double-click the My Computer icon. Next, right-click on the C: Drive, then select Properties. Uncheck “Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.” Next, apply changes to “C: subfolders and files,” and click OK. If a warning or error message appears (such as “Access is denied”), click the Ignore All button.

5.) Update the PC’s video and motherboard chipset drivers. Also, update and configure the BIOS. For more information on how to configure your BIOS properly, see this article on my site.

6.) Empty the Windows Prefetch folder every three months or so. Windows XP can “prefetch” portions of data and applications that are used frequently. This makes processes appear to load faster when called upon by the user. That’s fine. But over time, the prefetch folder may become overloaded with references to files and applications no longer in use. When that happens, Windows XP is wasting time, and slowing system performance, by pre-loading them. Nothing critical is in this folder, and the entire contents are safe to delete.

7.) Once a month, run a disk cleanup. Here’s how: Double-click the My Computer icon. Then right-click on the C: drive and select Properties. Click the Disk Cleanup button — it’s just to the right of the Capacity pie graph — and delete all temporary files.

8.) In your Device Manager, double-click on the IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers device, and ensure that DMA is enabled for each drive you have connected to the Primary and Secondary controller. Do this by double-clicking on Primary IDE Channel. Then click the Advanced Settings tab. Ensure the Transfer Mode is set to “DMA if available” for both Device 0 and Device 1. Then repeat this process with the Secondary IDE Channel.

9.) Upgrade the cabling. As hard-drive technology improves, the cabling requirements to achieve these performance boosts have become more stringent. Be sure to use 80-wire Ultra-133 cables on all of your IDE devices with the connectors properly assigned to the matching Master/Slave/Motherboard sockets. A single device must be at the end of the cable; connecting a single drive to the middle connector on a ribbon cable will cause signaling problems. With Ultra DMA hard drives, these signaling problems will prevent the drive from performing at its maximum potential. Also, because these cables inherently support “cable select,” the location of each drive on the cable is important. For these reasons, the cable is designed so drive positioning is explicitly clear.

10.) Remove all spyware from the computer. Use free programs such as AdAware by Lavasoft or SpyBot Search & Destroy. Once these programs are installed, be sure to check for and download any updates before starting your search. Anything either program finds can be safely removed. Any free software that requires spyware to run will no longer function once the spyware portion has been removed; if your customer really wants the program even though it contains spyware, simply reinstall it. For more information on removing Spyware visit this Web Pro News page.

11.) Remove any unnecessary programs and/or items from Windows Startup routine using the MSCONFIG utility. Here’s how: First, click Start, click Run, type MSCONFIG, and click OK. Click the StartUp tab, then uncheck any items you don’t want to start when Windows starts. Unsure what some items are? Visit the WinTasks Process Library. It contains known system processes, applications, as well as spyware references and explanations. Or quickly identify them by searching for the filenames using Google or another Web search engine.

12.) Remove any unnecessary or unused programs from the Add/Remove Programs section of the Control Panel.

13.) Turn off any and all unnecessary animations, and disable active desktop. In fact, for optimal performance, turn off all animations. Windows XP offers many different settings in this area. Here’s how to do it: First click on the System icon in the Control Panel. Next, click on the Advanced tab. Select the Settings button located under Performance. Feel free to play around with the options offered here, as nothing you can change will alter the reliability of the computer — only its responsiveness.

14.) If your customer is an advanced user who is comfortable editing their registry, try some of the performance registry tweaks offered at Tweak XP.

15.) Visit Microsoft’s Windows update site regularly, and download all updates labeled Critical. Download any optional updates at your discretion.

16.) Update the customer’s anti-virus software on a weekly, even daily, basis. Make sure they have only one anti-virus software package installed. Mixing anti-virus software is a sure way to spell disaster for performance and reliability.

17.) Make sure the customer has fewer than 500 type fonts installed on their computer. The more fonts they have, the slower the system will become. While Windows XP handles fonts much more efficiently than did the previous versions of Windows, too many fonts — that is, anything over 500 — will noticeably tax the system.

18.) Do not partition the hard drive. Windows XP’s NTFS file system runs more efficiently on one large partition. The data is no safer on a separate partition, and a reformat is never necessary to reinstall an operating system. The same excuses people offer for using partitions apply to using a folder instead. For example, instead of putting all your data on the D: drive, put it in a folder called “D drive.” You’ll achieve the same organizational benefits that a separate partition offers, but without the degradation in system performance. Also, your free space won’t be limited by the size of the partition; instead, it will be limited by the size of the entire hard drive. This means you won’t need to resize any partitions, ever. That task can be time-consuming and also can result in lost data.

19.) Check the system’s RAM to ensure it is operating properly. I recommend using a free program called MemTest86. The download will make a bootable CD or diskette (your choice), which will run 10 extensive tests on the PC’s memory automatically after you boot to the disk you created. Allow all tests to run until at least three passes of the 10 tests are completed. If the program encounters any errors, turn off and unplug the computer, remove a stick of memory (assuming you have more than one), and run the test again. Remember, bad memory cannot be repaired, but only replaced.

20.) If the PC has a CD or DVD recorder, check the drive manufacturer’s Web site for updated firmware. In some cases you’ll be able to upgrade the recorder to a faster speed. Best of all, it’s free.

21.) Disable unnecessary services. Windows XP loads a lot of services that your customer most likely does not need. To determine which services you can disable for your client, visit the Black Viper site for Windows XP configurations.

22.) If you’re sick of a single Windows Explorer window crashing and then taking the rest of your OS down with it, then follow this tip: open My Computer, click on Tools, then Folder Options. Now click on the View tab. Scroll down to “Launch folder windows in a separate process,” and enable this option. You’ll have to reboot your machine for this option to take effect.

23.) At least once a year, open the computer’s cases and blow out all the dust and debris. While you’re in there, check that all the fans are turning properly. Also inspect the motherboard capacitors for bulging or leaks. For more information on this leaking-capacitor phenomena, you can read numerous articles on my site.
Following any of these suggestions should result in noticeable improvements to the performance and reliability of your customers’ computers. If you still want to defrag a disk, remember that the main benefit will be to make your data more retrievable in the event of a crashed drive.

Fatal error: the system has become unstable or is busy,” it says. “Enter to return to Windows or press Control-Alt-Delete to restart your computer. If you do this you will lose any unsaved information in all open applications.”

You have just been struck by the Blue Screen of Death. Anyone who uses Mcft Windows will be familiar with this. What can you do? More importantly, how can you prevent it happening?

1 Hardware conflict

The number one reason why Windows crashes is hardware conflict. Each hardware device communicates to other devices through an interrupt request channel (IRQ). These are supposed to be unique for each device.

For example, a printer usually connects internally on IRQ 7. The keyboard usually uses IRQ 1 and the floppy disk drive IRQ 6. Each device will try to hog a single IRQ for itself.

If there are a lot of devices, or if they are not installed properly, two of them may end up sharing the same IRQ number. When the user tries to use both devices at the same time, a crash can happen. The way to check if your computer has a hardware conflict is through the following route:

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager.

Often if a device has a problem a yellow ‘!’ appears next to its description in the Device Manager. Highlight Computer (in the Device Manager) and press Properties to see the IRQ numbers used by your computer. If the IRQ number appears twice, two devices may be using it.

Sometimes a device might share an IRQ with something described as ‘IRQ holder for PCI steering’. This can be ignored. The best way to fix this problem is to remove the problem device and reinstall it.

Sometimes you may have to find more recent drivers on the internet to make the device function properly. A good resource is www.driverguide.com. If the device is a soundcard, or a modem, it can often be fixed by moving it to a different slot on the motherboard (be careful about opening your computer, as you may void the warranty).

When working inside a computer you should switch it off, unplug the mains lead and touch an unpainted metal surface to discharge any static electricity.

To be fair to Mcft, the problem with IRQ numbers is not of its making. It is a legacy problem going back to the first PC designs using the IBM 8086 chip. Initially there were only eight IRQs. Today there are 16 IRQs in a PC. It is easy to run out of them. There are plans to increase the number of IRQs in future designs.

2 Bad Ram

Ram (random-access memory) problems might bring on the blue screen of death with a message saying Fatal Exception Error. A fatal error indicates a serious hardware problem. Sometimes it may mean a part is damaged and will need replacing.

But a fatal error caused by Ram might be caused by a mismatch of chips. For example, mixing 70-nanosecond (70ns) Ram with 60ns Ram will usually force the computer to run all the Ram at the slower speed. This will often crash the machine if the Ram is overworked.

One way around this problem is to enter the BIOS settings and increase the wait state of the Ram. This can make it more stable. Another way to troubleshoot a suspected Ram problem is to rearrange the Ram chips on the motherboard, or take some of them out. Then try to repeat the circumstances that caused the crash. When handling Ram try not to touch the gold connections, as they can be easily damaged.

Parity error messages also refer to Ram. Modern Ram chips are either parity (ECC) or non parity (non-ECC). It is best not to mix the two types, as this can be a cause of trouble.

EMM386 error messages refer to memory problems but may not be connected to bad Ram. This may be due to free memory problems often linked to old Dos-based programmes.

3 BIOS settings

Every motherboard is supplied with a range of chipset settings that are decided in the factory. A common way to access these settings is to press the F2 or delete button during the first few seconds of a boot-up.

Once inside the BIOS, great care should be taken. It is a good idea to write down on a piece of paper all the settings that appear on the screen. That way, if you change something and the computer becomes more unstable, you will know what settings to revert to.

A common BIOS error concerns the CAS latency. This refers to the Ram. Older EDO (extended data out) Ram has a CAS latency of 3. Newer SDRam has a CAS latency of 2. Setting the wrong figure can cause the Ram to lock up and freeze the computer’s display.

Mcft Windows is better at allocating IRQ numbers than any BIOS. If possible set the IRQ numbers to Auto in the BIOS. This will allow Windows to allocate the IRQ numbers (make sure the BIOS setting for Plug and Play OS is switched to ‘yes’ to allow Windows to do this.).

4 Hard disk drives

After a few weeks, the information on a hard disk drive starts to become piecemeal or fragmented. It is a good idea to defragment the hard disk every week or so, to prevent the disk from causing a screen freeze. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-Disk Defragmenter

This will start the procedure. You will be unable to write data to the hard drive (to save it) while the disk is defragmenting, so it is a good idea to schedule the procedure for a period of inactivity using the Task Scheduler.

The Task Scheduler should be one of the small icons on the bottom right of the Windows opening page (the desktop).

Some lockups and screen freezes caused by hard disk problems can be solved by reducing the read-ahead optimisation. This can be adjusted by going to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System Icon-Performance-File System-Hard Disk.

Hard disks will slow down and crash if they are too full. Do some housekeeping on your hard drive every few months and free some space on it. Open the Windows folder on the C drive and find the Temporary Internet Files folder. Deleting the contents (not the folder) can free a lot of space.

Empty the Recycle Bin every week to free more space. Hard disk drives should be scanned every week for errors or bad sectors. Go to

* Start-Programs-Accessories-System Tools-ScanDisk

Otherwise assign the Task Scheduler to perform this operation at night when the computer is not in use.

5 Fatal OE exceptions and VXD errors

Fatal OE exception errors and VXD errors are often caused by video card problems.

These can often be resolved easily by reducing the resolution of the video display. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Display-Settings

Here you should slide the screen area bar to the left. Take a look at the colour settings on the left of that window. For most desktops, high colour 16-bit depth is adequate.

If the screen freezes or you experience system lockups it might be due to the video card. Make sure it does not have a hardware conflict. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Device Manager

Here, select the + beside Display Adapter. A line of text describing your video card should appear. Select it (make it blue) and press properties. Then select Resources and select each line in the window. Look for a message that says No Conflicts.

If you have video card hardware conflict, you will see it here. Be careful at this point and make a note of everything you do in case you make things worse.

The way to resolve a hardware conflict is to uncheck the Use Automatic Settings box and hit the Change Settings button. You are searching for a setting that will display a No Conflicts message.

Another useful way to resolve video problems is to go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-System-Performance-Graphics

Here you should move the Hardware Acceleration slider to the left. As ever, the most common cause of problems relating to graphics cards is old or faulty drivers (a driver is a small piece of software used by a computer to communicate with a device).

Look up your video card’s manufacturer on the internet and search for the most recent drivers for it.

6 Viruses

Often the first sign of a virus infection is instability. Some viruses erase the boot sector of a hard drive, making it impossible to start. This is why it is a good idea to create a Windows start-up disk. Go to

* Start-Settings-Control Panel-Add/Remove Programs

Here, look for the Start Up Disk tab. Virus protection requires constant vigilance.

A virus scanner requires a list of virus signatures in order to be able to identify viruses. These signatures are stored in a DAT file. DAT files should be updated weekly from the website of your antivirus software manufacturer.

An excellent antivirus programme is McAfee VirusScan by Network Associates ( www.nai.com). Another is Norton AntiVirus 2000, made by Symantec ( www.symantec.com).

7 Printers

The action of sending a document to print creates a bigger file, often called a postscript file.

Printers have only a small amount of memory, called a buffer. This can be easily overloaded. Printing a document also uses a considerable amount of CPU power. This will also slow down the computer’s performance.

If the printer is trying to print unusual characters, these might not be recognised, and can crash the computer. Sometimes printers will not recover from a crash because of confusion in the buffer. A good way to clear the buffer is to unplug the printer for ten seconds. Booting up from a powerless state, also called a cold boot, will restore the printer’s default settings and you may be able to carry on.

8 Software

A common cause of computer crash is faulty or badly-installed software. Often the problem can be cured by uninstalling the software and then reinstalling it. Use Norton Uninstall or Uninstall Shield to remove an application from your system properly. This will also remove references to the programme in the System Registry and leaves the way clear for a completely fresh copy.

The System Registry can be corrupted by old references to obsolete software that you thought was uninstalled. Use Reg Cleaner by Jouni Vuorio to clean up the System Registry and remove obsolete entries. It works on Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows 98 SE (Second Edition), Windows Millennium Edition (ME), NT4 and Windows 2000.

Read the instructions and use it carefully so you don’t do permanent damage to the Registry. If the Registry is damaged you will have to reinstall your operating system. Reg Cleaner can be obtained from www.jv16.org

Often a Windows problem can be resolved by entering Safe Mode. This can be done during start-up. When you see the message “Starting Windows” press F4. This should take you into Safe Mode.

Safe Mode loads a minimum of drivers. It allows you to find and fix problems that prevent Windows from loading properly.

Sometimes installing Windows is difficult because of unsuitable BIOS settings. If you keep getting SUWIN error messages (Windows setup) during the Windows installation, then try entering the BIOS and disabling the CPU internal cache. Try to disable the Level 2 (L2) cache if that doesn’t work.

Remember to restore all the BIOS settings back to their former settings following installation.

9 Overheating

Central processing units (CPUs) are usually equipped with fans to keep them cool. If the fan fails or if the CPU gets old it may start to overheat and generate a particular kind of error called a kernel error. This is a common problem in chips that have been overclocked to operate at higher speeds than they are supposed to.
One remedy is to get a bigger better fan and install it on top of the CPU.
CPU problems can often be fixed by disabling the CPU internal cache in the BIOS. This will make the machine run more slowly, but it should also be more stable.

10 Power supply problems

With all the new construction going on around the country the steady supply of electricity has become disrupted. A power surge or spike can crash a computer as easily as a power cut.

If this has become a nuisance for you then consider buying a uninterrupted power supply (UPS). This will give you a clean power supply when there is electricity, and it will give you a few minutes to perform a controlled shutdown in case of a power cut.

It is a good investment if your data are critical, because a power cut will cause any unsaved data to be lost.

We know how valuable the good health of your computer is to you. This is why we are giving you some free computer repair tips that can come in handy in troubleshooting your computer on your own. It is important and necessary to properly maintain your computer to keep its good health.
Over time, a computer may suffer from the wear and tear from frequent usage. Here’s what you can do to provide instant fix to your computer when you encounter issues like:

• Computer freezes can be resolved by cleaning your computer from unnecessary files. You can do this in several ways. You can start with the system tools that come with your windows operating system such as the disk clean-up. You can also optimize your browser by clearing temporary files, cookies, and browsing history.

• Computer errors can be caused by a corrupted registry in which case you need to download a registry cleaner that will fix the errors. Usually when you run the registry cleaner and have errors fox, other issues are resolved as well.

• Slow computer can be caused by viruses, spyware, and other malware programs attacking the registry and your computer. You can resolve this by downloading an online virus removal as well as anti-spyware programs that are readily available in the internet.

Step 1: Cleaning Up Your Hard Drive

As said in the introduction many of us have computers with resources taken up by unnecessary programs. Most of us have around 50 to 60 large and small programs that we don’t use. These programs take up our computers resources that could be kept available for the things we do need. Most of the time we have installed a program ourselves and used the program for our original purpose and don’t need them anymore. Or we just have never needed what is installed on our computer and don’t even know that it is there. One of the main issues we find is that when buying a computer it has a bunch of pre-installed programs. Some of these programs are trial software, or low end programs that don’t do what we need anyway. The majority of the time we find better programs later on that will do these functions or services for us more efficiently. Some of the software industry has achieved a level that can provide the general public with its services for no cost at all. Most of these programs are free downloads and have such a huge success that it is more important for them to monopolize and get the software out there than it is to charge a fee for the software and make a profit. Using universally and industry accepted programs will make things easier for us as a computer user.

STEP 1: Now that we have a general background of what is on our computers we need to clean it up. One of the most powerful tools that we have at our disposal is the add remove programs. We would recommend especially to people that have just purchased a new computer the first thing we would do is take the time and go to this tool and get rid of trial programs or programs you know you will not ever use. It is beneficial to you to remove the stuff you don’t need properly. You can find this tool by following the commands:

Click START – Click Control Panel – Program and Features

This will give you a list of the software that is installed on your computer. We would recommend that you scroll through these and anything that you see that is a 30 day trial or something that you have no interest in using remove. CAUTION: If you do not know what a program is or what it does do not remove it! We would recommend doing some research on the software if you are not sure what it is for or what it does. When you find software that you do not need click on it and Click Uninstall. This is the button right at the top tool bar next to organize, views, change and repair. Then follow the directions from there. This is one way of removing software properly and will help organize and remove software you do not need freeing up your computers resources.

Step 2: Defragmenting Tool

Now that we have all of the programs off of our computer that we will not be using, we are one step closer to not having a slow computer. We have a tool that can optimize our computers performance by organization. The defragmenting is a tool that is built into Windows and available for us to utilize. Here is how it works. Basically you can look at your hard drive as a bunch of music CD’s that are stacked. Every time you save something a CD is pulled and that information is placed on that specific CD or space. Now what happens when you remove a program or delete something off of your computer? That CD (or specific space) is pulled again and erased and put back. How does this affect you and cause a slow computer? Well the information that was erased in that particular space on your hard drive leaves a void with surrounding information around it. Your computer has to sort through all of these voids to access the information it needs or save new information when it is requested. This takes time and leads to a slow computer. So what the defragmenting tool does is basically organize your hard drive. It takes all the information that belongs together and lines it up and front loads the next information and so on. It is like if all the CD’s in the stack with information on them, were moved to the top of the stack so that our computer knows where to look to find exactly what it needs. This way it does not have to search through voids and empty partitions to gather all the information. This results in a faster computing process and soon your slow computer will be non-existent.

Step 2: The first thing that we like to do and advice people is that you need to make sure your Recycle Bin is empty. You can do this by clicking on it on your desk top and clicking Empty the Recycle Bin. You will be prompted are you sure you want to permanently delete this and click Yes.
Now you are ready to defragment and put a stop to your slow computer. You can do this by these commands:

Click Start – Computer – *Right Click on Local Disk (C:) – Properties – Click on Tool Tab – Click Defragment Now

This sometimes can take 30 minutes to hours. It just depends on how bad your computer needs to be optimized. Click defragment and let it run.

*Important: Depending on how many hard drives you have on your computer they may be named something different or have another letter (D:), (F:), (G:), etc.

Step 3: Clean Your StartUp

One of the major problems that causes a slow computer is that when you install a program that program can be placed into what is caused a start up folder. This folder contains information for the computer to use to when you turn on your computer. It is like a list that tells the computer what programs to get started so that when you go to open one of these programs it opens in a reasonable amount of time. This sounds good but what we seem to see is that too many of these programs get placed into this folder causing an overload of your computers resources which leads to a slow computer. If your computer is struggling anyway and then it has let’s say 15-20 programs to pre-start it is going to take way too much time to compute anything. Lucky for us we have yet another tool built in at our disposal called the startup folder. This is the location where we can clean out these unnecessary programs to prevent them from starting.

Step3: There are a couple of ways to access this specific folder and to remove programs from this startup list. It is important to know that this will not remove the program from your computer it will just remove it from the list the computer uses to pre-start it. We will show you the two easiest ways to do this. For the first way to do this please follow the command:

Click Start – Click All Programs (wait for them to populate) – Find the folder that is called Startup

Ounce you have found this folder you can Right Click the programs in it and click delete. Do this until the Startup folder is empty. If it already says empty that is exactly what we want to see.

The second way to do this is a little bit more involved but it is what most people use when they are optimizing the performance of their computers.

Click Start- in Start Search type in Run – Click on Run – Next to open type msconfig

This will open your system configuration and you can click on the Startup Tab. Now you have a list of the programs that are starting when you turn on your computer. Uncheck the box next to the program so it will not start up when windows starts and click ok. Caution: Again if you do not know what the program does or is do some research before taking it off the list. The good thing is that you cannot do much harm hear. If something is not right you can always go back and undo what you did and re-check the box. This is a great simple way to avoid a slow computer.

We have all heard the scares and the worries when it comes to your protection and your computers security. Almost every week we see at least one headline in the media about a computer breach or a virus that has infected peoples computer and is spreading fast. Even our own government’s computer systems are rumored to have security breaches from time to time. Let’s face it, all of our information is in computers now a days. Our daily activates and lives depend on computers. To truly understand how important our computer security is all you have to do is just imagine yourself here and now losing your computer. All the e-mails, bank accounts, credit card information, web site bookmarks, music, pictures, software practically everything gone in a second. This is a great reason for some people to want to cause havoc. They do this through viruses, adware, and spyware. What happens if our computers start to become slower? Could it be a virus?

Well the answer to that is yes it could be a virus but not likely. There are three categories that are considered to be developed for one purpose (to cause havoc) that could slow your computer down. As mentioned above they are viruses, adware, and spyware. The first, viruses, are programmed and designed to destroy. The basic plan or design of a virus is to get into your computer and to do as much damage to your computers files as possible. People have programmed them to target specific files on your hard drive that your computer needs to function correctly and destroy them. They achieve this by either totally erasing them or by rewriting them with different code that leads to other files to destroy. Viruses are purely meant to destruct your computer. If this happens than your computer will not run smoothly at all and lead to a total crash of your system or your computer to run very slow.

The second form of destruction that can influence your computers performance is adware. This is a form of virus that attaches itself to other programs on your computer. It uses the other programs and needs the other programs so it will not destroy them or erase any of their important files or content on your hard drive. Instead the adware type of virus approaches files as information giants that they can corrupt and use. Most of the time adware will rewrite some parts of important files and link itself into them. For you the user the regular programs are going to run like normal but you may see more pop ups when your online and defiantly a much slower computer because your computer is not only running the software that you want but now someone else’s added software to advertise or to use an existing program.

The third form of virus is spyware. This is the form that people get concerned about most. This is what most people call the silent virus. This virus attaches itself into your computer and doesn’t cause any damage or any slowing down affect. Its primary job is to gather information about you, sites you are going to, how long and how many, what programs you have on your computer, ect. It is a virus that is getting as much information about you as possible and then when you get online sending it out to a server without you knowing about it. It is a form of virus that is very intrusive on your privacy and what you are doing.

We hope this has helped you and Help Slow Computer is a site that has a goal of helping you in speeding up your computers performance. Having a Slow Computer is not something you have to live with, let us help by sharing information with each other.

Did you know that your PC has tons of registry errors … right now? I’m willing to make that bet for the simply fact that I discovered over 237 errors on my brand new PC after running a registry cleaner that I proactively decided to get when I bought the darned thing.

Why so many registry errors? This thing is new it should be immaculate! Well, the sad truth is that Windows is ages from being a truly efficient operating system, and what it does initially when it starts up for the very first time is it takes inventory of its installed hardware and software, then it goes out and finds updates for all of them. Then you start up an application or two al excited about your new system, while in the background it makes new and updates existing entries in its registry.

This is one of Windows’ most unreliable functions, updating its own registry. It can do most everything else fairly well, the windows update wizard makes certain you get your patches and service packs and it even download driver updates for your hardware. Why can’t it maintain its own registry better?

These errors are invisible to you, not at all noticeable because you won’t immediately see the results of these inaccuracies. They’ll lay dormant in your registry and build up over time, more of them are created and left ignored, trial programs expire and new ones get installed. Months later you start to experience slow downs and your first dialog pop ups, you’re busy so you ignore them and click “OK”.

When registry errors go ignored they simply build up. If a new PC can have over 237 registry errors, this should be an alert than a registry utility should be employed to take care of some much needed maintenance. You can use the built-in registry editor in Windows, but manual editing of the registry is never recommended, too easy to make mistakes.

A reliable registry cleaner will easily take this burden off your hands much easier than doing it manually. Don’t let your registry get out of hand, it needs attention just like the rest of your PC.

Wanna see how I found those 237 registry errors? Watch my RegCure review, this is the tool I used to scan my brand new system. I made a video of how it works and all its features once I found the errors I fixed them quickly. I’m sure you’ll find it useful and you can compare this tool side by side to other Registry Cleaners.

Win XP Tweaks

———–
STARTUP
———–

Windows Prefetcher
******************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ Session Manager \ Memory Management \ PrefetchParameters]

Under this key there is a setting called EnablePrefetcher, the default setting of which is 3. Increasing this number to 5 gives the prefetcher system more system resources to prefetch application data for faster load times. Depending on the number of boot processes you run on your computer, you may get benefits from settings up to 9. However, I do not have any substantive research data on settings above 5 so I cannot verify the benefits of a higher setting. This setting also may effect the loading times of your most frequently launched applications. This setting will not take effect until after you reboot your system.

Master File Table Zone Reservation
**********************************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ FileSystem]

Under this key there is a setting called NtfsMftZoneReservation, the default setting of which is 1. The range of this value is from 1 to 4. The default setting reserves one-eighth of the volume for the MFT. A setting of 2 reserves one-quarter of the volume for the MFT. A setting of 3 for NtfsMftZoneReservation reserves three-eighths of the volume for the MFT and setting it to 4 reserves half of the volume for the MFT. Most users will never exceed one-quarter of the volume. I recommend a setting of 2 for most users. This allows for a “moderate number of files” commensurate with the number of small files included in most computer games and applications. Reboot after applying this tweak.

Optimize Boot Files
*******************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Dfrg \ BootOptimizeFunction]

Under this key is a text value named Enable. A value of Y for this setting enables the boot files defragmenter. This setting defragments the boot files and may move the boot files to the beginning (fastest) part of the partition, but that last statement is unverified. Reboot after applying this tweak.

Optimizing Startup Programs [msconfig]
**************************************

MSConfig, similar to the application included in Win9x of the same name, allows the user to fine tune the applications that are launched at startup without forcing the user to delve deep into the registry. To disable some of the applications launched, load msconfig.exe from the run command line, and go to the Startup tab. From there, un-ticking the checkbox next to a startup item will stop it from launching. There are a few application that you will never want to disable (ctfmon comes to mind), but for the most part the best settings vary greatly from system to system.

As a good rule of thumb, though, it is unlikely that you will want to disable anything in the Windows directory (unless it’s a third-party program that was incorrectly installed into the Windows directory), nor will you want to disable anything directly relating to your system hardware. The only exception to this is when you are dealing with software, which does not give you any added benefits (some OEM dealers load your system up with software you do not need). The nice part of msconfig is that it does not delete any of the settings, it simply disables them, and so you can go back and restart a startup application if you find that you need it. This optimization won’t take effect until after a reboot.

Bootvis Application
*******************
The program was designed by Microsoft to enable Windows XP to cold boot in 30 seconds, return from hibernation in 20 seconds, and return from standby in 10 seconds. Bootvis has two extremely useful features. First, it can be used to optimize the boot process on your computer automatically. Second, it can be used to analyze the boot process for specific subsystems that are having difficulty loading. The first process specifically targets the prefetching subsystem, as well as the layout of boot files on the disk. When both of these systems are optimized, it can result in a significant reduction in the time it takes for the computer to boot.

Before attempting to use Bootvis to analyze or optimize the boot performance of your system, make sure that the task scheduler service has been enabled – the program requires the service to run properly. Also, close all open programs as well – using the software requires a reboot.

To use the software to optimize your system startup, first start with a full analysis of a fresh boot. Start Bootvis, go to the Tools menu, and select next boot. Set the Trace Repetition Settings to 2 repetitions, Start at 1, and Reboot automatically. Then set the trace into motion. The system will fully reboot twice, and then reopen bootvis and open the second trace file (should have _2 in the name). Analyze the graphs and make any changes that you think are necessary (this is a great tool for determining which startup programs you want to kill using msconfig). Once you have made your optimizations go to the Trace menu, and select the Optimize System item. This will cause the system to reboot and will then make some changes to the file structure on the hard drive (this includes a defragmentation of boot files and a shifting of their location to the fastest portion of the hard disk, as well as some other optimizations). After this is done, once again run a Trace analysis as above, except change the starting number to 3. Once the system has rebooted both times, compare the charts from the second trace to the charts for the fourth trace to show you the time improvement of the system’s boot up.

The standard defragmenter included with Windows XP will not undo the boot optimizations performed by this application.

———————————–
General Performance Tweaks
———————————–

IRQ Priority Tweak
******************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ System \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ PriorityControl]

You will need to create a new DWORD: IRQ#Priority (where # is the number of the IRQ you want to prioritize) and give it a setting of 1. This setting gives the requisite IRQ channel priority over the other IRQs on a software level. This can be extremely important for functions and hardware subsystems that need real-time access to other parts of the system. There are several different subsystems that might benefit from this tweak. Generally, I recommend giving either the System CMOS or the video card priority. The System CMOS generally has an IRQ setting of 8, and giving it priority enhances the I/O performance of the system. Giving priority to the video card can increase frame rates and make AGP more effective.

You can give several IRQs priority, but I am not entirely certain how the system interacts when several IRQs are given priority – it may cause random instabilities in the system, although it is more likely that there’s a parsing system built into Windows XP to handle such an occurrence. Either way, I would not recommend it.

QoS tweak
*********
QoS (Quality of Service) is a networking subsystem which is supposed to insure that the network runs properly. The problem with the system is that it eats up 20% of the total bandwidth of any networking service on the computer (including your internet connection). If you are running XP Professional, you can disable the bandwidth quota reserved for the system using the Group Policy Editor [gpedit.msc].

You can run the group policy editor from the Run command line. To find the setting, expand “Local Computer Policy” and go to “Administrative Templates” under “Computer Configuration.” Then find the “Network” branch and select “QoS Packet Scheduler.” In the right hand box, double click on the “Limit Reservable Bandwidth.” From within the Settings tab, enable the setting and then go into the “Bandwidth Limit %” and set it to 0%. The reason for this is that if you disable this setting, the computer defaults to 20%. This is true even when you aren’t using QoS.

Free Idle Tasks Tweak
*********************

This tweak will free up processing time from any idle processes and allow it to be used by the foreground application. It is useful particularly if you are running a game or other 3D application. Create a new shortcut to “Rundll32.exe advapi32.dll,ProcessIdleTasks” and place it on your desktop. Double-click on it anytime you need all of your processing power, before opening the application.

Windows Indexing Services
Windows Indexing Services creates a searchable database that makes system searches for words and files progress much faster – however, it takes an enormous amount of hard drive space as well as a significant amount of extra CPU cycles to maintain the system. Most users will want to disable this service to release the resources for use by the system. To turn off indexing, open My Computer and right click on the drive on which you wish to disable the Indexing Service. Enter the drive’s properties and under the general tab, untick the box for “Allow the Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching.”

Priority Tweak
**************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ PriorityControl]

This setting effectively runs each instance of an application in its own process for significantly faster application performance and greater stability. This is extremely useful for users with stability problems, as it can isolate specific instances of a program so as not to bring down the entire application. And, it is particularly useful for users of Internet Explorer, for if a rogue web page crashes your browser window, it does not bring the other browser windows down with it. It has a similar effect on any software package where multiple instances might be running at once, such as Microsoft Word. The only problem is that this takes up significantly more memory, because such instances of a program cannot share information that is in active memory (many DLLs and such will have to be loaded into memory multiple times). Because of this, it is not recommended for anyone with less than 512 MB of RAM, unless they are running beta software (or have some other reason for needing the added stability).

There are two parts to this tweak. First is to optimize XP’s priority control for the processes. Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ PriorityControl and set the “Win32PrioritySeparation” DWORD to 38. Next, go into My Computer and under Tools, open the Folder Options menu. Select the View tab and check the “Launch folder windows in separate process” box. This setting actually forces each window into its own memory tread and gives it a separate process priority.

Powertweak application
**********************
xxx.powertweak.com

Powertweak is an application, which acts much like a driver for our chipsets. It optimizes the communication between the chipset and the CPU, and unlocks several “hidden” features of the chipset that can increase the speed of the system. Specifically, it tweaks the internal registers of the chipset and processor that the BIOS does not for better communication performance between subsystems. Supported CPUs and chipsets can see a significant increase in I/O bandwidth, increasing the speed of the entire system. Currently the application supports most popular CPUs and chipsets, although you will need to check the website for your specific processor/chipset combo – the programmer is working on integrating even more chipsets and CPUs into the software.

Offload Network Task Processing onto the Network Card
*****************************************************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Services \ Tcpip \ Parameters]

Many newer network cards have the ability of taking some of the network processing load off of the processor and performing it right on the card (much like Hardware T&L on most new video cards). This can significantly lower the CPU processes needed to maintain a network connection, freeing up that processor time for other tasks. This does not work on all cards, and it can cause network connectivity problems on systems where the service is enabled but unsupported, so please check with your NIC manufacturer prior to enabling this tweak. Find the DWORD “DisableTaskOffload” and set the value to 0 (the default value is 1). If the key is not already available, create it.

Force XP to Unload DLLs
***********************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer]
“AlwaysUnloadDLL”=dword:00000001

XP has a bad habit of keeping dynamic link libraries that are no longer in use resident in memory. Not only do the DLLs use up precious memory space, but they also tend to cause stability problems in some systems. To force XP to unload any DLLs in memory when the application that called them is no longer in memory, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer and find the DWORD “AlwaysUnloadDLL”. You may need to create this key. Set the value to 1 to force the operating system to unload DLLs.

Give 16-bit apps their own separate processes
*********************************************
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ WOW]
“DefaultSeparateVDM”=”Yes”

By default, Windows XP will only open one 16-bit process and cram all 16-bit apps running on the system at a given time into that process. This simulates how MS-DOS based systems viewed systems and is necessary for some older applications that run together and share resources. However, most 16-bit applications work perfectly well by themselves and would benefit from the added performance and stability of their own dedicated resources. To force Windows XP to give each 16-bit application it’s own resources, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SYSTEM \ CurrentControlSet \ Control \ WOW and find the String “DefaultSeparateVDM”. If it is not there, you may need to create it. Set the value of this to Yes to give each 16-bit application its own process, and No to have the 16-bit application all run in the same memory space.

Disable User Tracking
*********************
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer]
“NoInstrumentation”=dword:00000001

The user tracking system built into Windows XP is useless to 99% of users (there are very few uses for the information collected other than for a very nosy system admin), and it uses up precious resources to boot, so it makes sense to disable this “feature” of Windows XP. To do so, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Policies \ Explorer and find the DWORD “NoInstrumentation”. You may need to create this key if it is not there. The default setting is 0, but setting it to 1 will disable most of the user tracking features of the system.

Thumbnail Cache
***************
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced]
“DisableThumbnailCache”=dword:00000001

Windows XP has a neat feature for graphic and video files that creates a “thumbnail” of the image or first frame of the video and makes it into an oversized icon for the file. There are two ways that Explorer can do this, it can create them fresh each time you access the folder or it can load them from a thumbnail cache. The thumbnail caches on systems with a large number of image and video files can become staggeringly large. To disable the Thumbnail Cache, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Windows \ CurrentVersion \ Explorer \ Advanced and find the DWORD “DisableThumbnailCache”. You may need to create this key. A setting of 1 is recommended for systems where the number of graphic and video files is large, and a setting of 0 is recommended for systems not concerned about hard drive space, as loading the files from the cache is significantly quicker than creating them from scratch each time a folder is accessed.

There are a lot of PC users that know little about “Spyware”, “Mal-ware”, “hijackers”, “Dialers” & many more. This will help you avoid pop-ups, spammers and all those baddies.

What is spy-ware?
Spy-ware is Internet jargon for Advertising Supported software (Ad-ware). It is a way for shareware authors to make money from a product, other than by selling it to the users. There are several large media companies that offer them to place banner ads in their products in exchange for a portion of the revenue from banner sales. This way, you don’t have to pay for the software and the developers are still getting paid. If you find the banners annoying, there is usually an option to remove them, by paying the regular licensing fee.

Known spywares
There are thousands out there, new ones are added to the list everyday. But here are a few:
Alexa, Aureate/Radiate, BargainBuddy, ClickTillUWin, Conducent Timesink, Cydoor, Comet Cursor, eZula/KaZaa Toptext, Flashpoint/Flashtrack, Flyswat, Gator, GoHip, Hotbar, ISTbar, Lions Pride Enterprises/Blazing Logic/Trek Blue, Lop (C2Media), Mattel Brodcast, Morpheus, NewDotNet, Realplayer, Songspy, Xupiter, Web3000, WebHancer, Windows Messenger Service.

How to check if a program has spyware?
The is this Little site that keeps a database of programs that are known to install spyware.

Check Here: http://www.spywareguide.com/product_search.php

If you would like to block pop-ups (IE Pop-ups).
There tons of different types out there, but these are the 2 best, i think.

Try: Google Toolbar (http://toolbar.google.com/) This program is Free

BandWidth Explained

Most hosting companies offer a variety of bandwidth options in their plans. So exactly what is bandwidth as it relates to web hosting? Put simply, bandwidth is the amount of traffic that is allowed to occur between your web site and the rest of the internet. The amount of bandwidth a hosting company can provide is determined by their network connections, both internal to their data center and external to the public internet.

Network Connectivity

The internet, in the most simplest of terms, is a group of millions of computers connected by networks. These connections within the internet can be large or small depending upon the cabling and equipment that is used at a particular internet location. It is the size of each network connection that determines how much bandwidth is available. For example, if you use a DSL connection to connect to the internet, you have 1.54 Mega bits (Mb) of bandwidth. Bandwidth therefore is measured in bits (a single 0 or 1). Bits are grouped in bytes which form words, text, and other information that is transferred between your computer and the internet.

If you have a DSL connection to the internet, you have dedicated bandwidth between your computer and your internet provider. But your internet provider may have thousands of DSL connections to their location. All of these connection aggregate at your internet provider who then has their own dedicated connection to the internet (or multiple connections) which is much larger than your single connection. They must have enough bandwidth to serve your computing needs as well as all of their other customers. So while you have a 1.54Mb connection to your internet provider, your internet provider may have a 255Mb connection to the internet so it can accommodate your needs and up to 166 other users (255/1.54).

Traffic

A very simple analogy to use to understand bandwidth and traffic is to think of highways and cars. Bandwidth is the number of lanes on the highway and traffic is the number of cars on the highway. If you are the only car on a highway, you can travel very quickly. If you are stuck in the middle of rush hour, you may travel very slowly since all of the lanes are being used up.

Traffic is simply the number of bits that are transferred on network connections. It is easiest to understand traffic using examples. One Gigabyte is 2 to the 30th power (1,073,741,824) bytes. One gigabyte is equal to 1,024 megabytes. To put this in perspective, it takes one byte to store one character. Imagine 100 file cabinets in a building, each of these cabinets holds 1000 folders. Each folder has 100 papers. Each paper contains 100 characters – A GB is all the characters in the building. An MP3 song is about 4MB, the same song in wav format is about 40MB, a full length movie can be 800MB to 1000MB (1000MB = 1GB).

If you were to transfer this MP3 song from a web site to your computer, you would create 4MB of traffic between the web site you are downloading from and your computer. Depending upon the network connection between the web site and the internet, the transfer may occur very quickly, or it could take time if other people are also downloading files at the same time. If, for example, the web site you download from has a 10MB connection to the internet, and you are the only person accessing that web site to download your MP3, your 4MB file will be the only traffic on that web site. However, if three people are all downloading that same MP at the same time, 12MB (3 x 4MB) of traffic has been created. Because in this example, the host only has 10MB of bandwidth, someone will have to wait. The network equipment at the hosting company will cycle through each person downloading the file and transfer a small portion at a time so each person’s file transfer can take place, but the transfer for everyone downloading the file will be slower. If 100 people all came to the site and downloaded the MP3 at the same time, the transfers would be extremely slow. If the host wanted to decrease the time it took to download files simultaneously, it could increase the bandwidth of their internet connection (at a cost due to upgrading equipment).

Hosting Bandwidth

In the example above, we discussed traffic in terms of downloading an MP3 file. However, each time you visit a web site, you are creating traffic, because in order to view that web page on your computer, the web page is first downloaded to your computer (between the web site and you) which is then displayed using your browser software (Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.) . The page itself is simply a file that creates traffic just like the MP3 file in the example above (however, a web page is usually much smaller than a music file).

A web page may be very small or large depending upon the amount of text and the number and quality of images integrated within the web page. For example, the home page for CNN.com is about 200KB (200 Kilobytes = 200,000 bytes = 1,600,000 bits). This is typically large for a web page. In comparison, Yahoo’s home page is about 70KB.

How Much Bandwidth Is Enough?

It depends (don’t you hate that answer). But in truth, it does. Since bandwidth is a significant determinant of hosting plan prices, you should take time to determine just how much is right for you. Almost all hosting plans have bandwidth requirements measured in months, so you need to estimate the amount of bandwidth that will be required by your site on a monthly basis

If you do not intend to provide file download capability from your site, the formula for calculating bandwidth is fairly straightforward:

Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size x 31 x Fudge Factor

If you intend to allow people to download files from your site, your bandwidth calculation should be:

[(Average Daily Visitors x Average Page Views x Average Page Size) +
(Average Daily File Downloads x Average File Size)] x 31 x Fudge Factor

Let us examine each item in the formula:

Average Daily Visitors – The number of people you expect to visit your site, on average, each day. Depending upon how you market your site, this number could be from 1 to 1,000,000.

Average Page Views – On average, the number of web pages you expect a person to view. If you have 50 web pages in your web site, an average person may only view 5 of those pages each time they visit.

Average Page Size – The average size of your web pages, in Kilobytes (KB). If you have already designed your site, you can calculate this directly.

Average Daily File Downloads – The number of downloads you expect to occur on your site. This is a function of the numbers of visitors and how many times a visitor downloads a file, on average, each day.

Average File Size – Average file size of files that are downloadable from your site. Similar to your web pages, if you already know which files can be downloaded, you can calculate this directly.

Fudge Factor – A number greater than 1. Using 1.5 would be safe, which assumes that your estimate is off by 50%. However, if you were very unsure, you could use 2 or 3 to ensure that your bandwidth requirements are more than met.

Usually, hosting plans offer bandwidth in terms of Gigabytes (GB) per month. This is why our formula takes daily averages and multiplies them by 31.

Summary

Most personal or small business sites will not need more than 1GB of bandwidth per month. If you have a web site that is composed of static web pages and you expect little traffic to your site on a daily basis, go with a low bandwidth plan. If you go over the amount of bandwidth allocated in your plan, your hosting company could charge you over usage fees, so if you think the traffic to your site will be significant, you may want to go through the calculations above to estimate the amount of bandwidth required in a hosting plan.
